Petaluma, CA - On Monday, August 23, 2010 Assemblymember Jared
Huffman (D-San Rafael) will present his August Sustainable North Bay Award to
Paragon Label of Petaluma. Founded in 1998, Paragon Label became a Certified
Sonoma County Green Business in 2008. Over the years, the family-run business
has taken numerous steps to conserve natural resources, prevent pollution as
noted below.
Recycling:
- For over a decade Paragon Label has recycled
pounds of pressure-sensitive paper each year; more than 370,000 pounds this
year.
- Paragon recycles 100% of its excess paper stock
and setup paper preventing more than 185 tons of waste from going to landfills
each year.
- Inks unused after printing labels are either
stored for future use or recycled into fuel.
- 100% of chemicals used in the film and
plate-making process are recycled, preventing 900 gallons of chemicals from
entering the waste stream.
Emissions Reduction:
- Paragon uses water-based inks, which are
naturally low in VOC (volative organic compounds) and cause minimal air
emission, and UV inks which have zero VOC.
- Paragon consistently produces less than half of
the VOC emissions allowed by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
- Over the past three years, Paragon has cut
electrical usage by more than 73,000 kilowatt hours (KWh) per year.
- Paragon's innovative energy-efficient lighting
system has been lauded by PG&E and reduced energy usage by 70,000 KWh per
year.
- As a member of the PG&E Climate Smart
program, Paragon offsets the greenhouse gas emissions needed for energy use and
created a carbon neutral manufacturing facility.
- Paragon has been awarded a PG&E Innovative
Leadership Award three years in a row.
Water Treatment:
- The more than 72,000 gallons of water treated at
their on-site facility exceeds municipal drinking water standards for levels of
trace metals.
- Captured contaminates from Paragon's waste-water
are shipped to an approved EPA disposal center and do not re-enter the
environment.
